Sills van Bohemen Architecture
Our practice concentrates on two areas of work.
- Residential architecture: private houses & interiors/multi-unit housing
- Public and institutional: work with an urban design/civic focus
We have maintained a focus on residential architecture since the launch of the practice and have completed a number of new houses and large residential alteration projects. Several of our new houses are on coastal sites.
Over the last six years the practice has built up experience and a body of quality work in the urban design field, working primarily for the public sector. This has included town centre masterplanning, urban concept design, park design and urban analysis. Alongside this work has been writing and illustration work for local authority design guides, plan changes, Ministry for the Environment case studies and journal articles.
The firm considers its strength across all aspects of its work to be clear analysis and conceptual thinking backed up by strong graphic and written communication skills.
Environmental and Social Sustainability
A greater awareness of the potential for human impact on the environment has developed over recent years. We consider that as architects we have a responsibility to strive for a high level of environmental performance from our buildings. Primarily this involves thoughtful material choices and making good use of passive systems to minimise the environmental impact of our designs over their life cycle. There is also a growing opportunity to use active systems in projects and incorporation of on-site renewables production. Christina is currently working towards certification as a Green Star NZ Accredited Professional.
In addition, in the design of urban environments we aim to be socially sensitive. Our design work aims to remain respectful to its history, culture, immediate surrounds, users and the greater context.
